Before you go ghost hunting!

We have all seen the ghost-hunting tv series, and they look fascinating, and each venue is packed to the roof with spirits, good and bad!

This is not the case in the real world most of the time. This blog will give tips to help you prepare before you go ghost hunting.

Be prepared

In the United Kingdom, we intend to ghost hunt in the winter months as the nights are longer, giving us more time for the investigation.

If this is your first ever ghost hunt, you must ensure you are fully prepared with the correct items before attending the event.

My tips are based on ghost hunting in the winter but equally, apply to all seasons.

Wear many layers of clothing and have a good coat; most venues don't have the heating on when you're investing, and it can get frigid. Don't forget your hat and gloves with finger peeps to use any equipment.

Wear the correct footwear, no flip flops, high heels, wedges, or crocs; you get the idea.

The environment you will be entering may be hundreds of years old, and the floors may be uneven; the stairs may have tiny treads, and you could be standing for a long time.

For the most part, the venue will be dark, and in some cases, so dark you can not see your hand in front of your face. Ensure you have a head torch with a red light, which is very important as you don't lose your night vision or, more importantly, you don't blind other guests with white light from your touch.

Hand warmers are great for keeping your hands warm if you forget or don't like wearing gloves; some last for 10 hours. If you don't like cold feet, you can get foot warmers or use thermal socks.

Consider what equipment you will use; if it is your 1st time, take a notepad and pen. Don't overly worry about the equipment other investigators are running around with. Instead, trust your senses; let you know when something feels wrong.

Keep calm, and don't panic. Instead, use your notepad and write down what you hear, feel, and see. Then, you can look for equipment if you enjoyed the evening and want to attend more investigations.

Start with ghost-hunting devices like:

  • EMF meters K2s are a favourite choice as they indicate when the EMF levels are changing.

  • Digital voice recorders can help to record disembodied voices; look for a device that allows you to put headphones into the machine, enabling you to hear the sounds you're recording.

  • Use your phone to take photographs of the investigation; make sure you take two or three photos. By taking two or three pictures, if an anomaly is presented in two or more of the images, then it could be worth investigating.

  • Remember to warn other guests about the flash firing, as ghost hunters can turn away or cover their eyes to avoid losing their night vision and being momentarily blinded.

  • Using flash may show dust, moisture, and water droplets in the atmosphere, reflecting light and showing up as translucent shapes.

Don't investigate on your own!

Never investigate a venue or outside space on your own. Besides the safety aspect and risk of getting hurt. You never know what type of spirits you may encounter. Safety in numbers and all that!

Be careful if investigating outside, know the lay of the land make sure you take your time when walking around or to the area you want to explore.

It would be an excellent time to use your white light touch or, if possible, visit during the day to review the location.

Always ask for permission and not for forgiveness!

Suppose you plan on investigating private land or property. In that case, it is best to get permission from owners in writing, so you are covered and can prove you have the right to be there. If you are investigating open ruins, haunted woods, or other areas of interest. Inform the police on 101 (UK) and tell them that you and other members (numbers) will be exploring a site.

Inform the Police about your investigation

Inform the police that your cars will be parked in this area for the duration of the investigation. You may get a visit from the police when investigating to check on you. If residents or passers-by call 101 or 999 (UK), you have registered your investigation and won't waste the police's time. Remember to contact them when you have finished your event to inform them you are no longer onsite.

Do your research!

Research your venue or the area you will investigate to identify any people or events you can target when investigating.
