Join us as we investigate Castle Cottage in Wiltshire. The cottage was built in the 17th Century. However, the land it sat on dates back to the 12th Century or earlier, with a small castle built for the Lord of Stapleford Manor and was held by the Hussey family from the mid-12th Century.
Only the mound and ditch survive the castle, but no masonry or other direct evidence of a building has been found. The castle site has mostly stayed the same since the late 18th Century. The medieval ringwork and castle survive as earthworks. The bank of the ringwork is 10 feet high internally and rises 20 feet above the bottom of the surrounding ditch. It is between 200 and 300 feet in diameter.
A farmstead stood immediately south of the castle site. The farmhouse, Manor Farm, was built in the 17th Century as a small house of two storeys with attics. The ground floor had one room on each side of the central chimney stack: a large extension to the east was built in 1860. Two flint and limestone rubble cottages between Manor Farm and the castle mound are also of 17th-century origin. One of the cottages is the Haunted Castle Cottage.
This is an overnight investigation and we have 11 hours to investigate this cottage. As this is a residueal property please bring slippers, flipflops for the inside investigation as we are also going to be investigating the woods and castle eathworks.
