Witchcraft, The Occult and the Paranormal

Here are the highlights from our live talk on the 7th of November 2022 at the George and Dragon Pub, Ilfracombe, North Devon, UK. Our speakers are the very talneted witches and mediums Ann Kenny and Fae Vowles.

Witches were perceived as evil beings that were pagans devoting their life to the devil. However, this isn't the case most of the time. In most cases, witches work with nature and their surroundings and are often now known as wise women and healers.

The term witches caused hysteria around the 1400s. They would be tortured, ridiculed and put to death if they were accused of being a witch.

To be accused of begin a witch, you would have to

  • Be female

  • Financially unstable

  • Having black cats and knowing herbal work

  • Having too many female friends

  • Your neighbour is having difficulty conceiving

  • Being vocal and independent

  • Having a wart or birthmark

Realistically this hysteria was a scare tactic from the church to inflict fear in people. But this doesn't mean that there were no witches around.
